Wealth Advisors Say Max Out Tax-Advantaged Accounts Before Chasing Returns in 2026

Financial planners are urging clients to fully fund 401(k)s, IRAs, and HSAs before pursuing other investments in 2026. Contribution limits increased this year, and the federal estate tax exemption rose to $15 million per individual. Experts say tax optimization is the most reliable path to long-term wealth.

Wealth Advisors Say Max Out Tax-Advantaged Accounts Before Chasing Returns in 2026

Financial planners are urging clients to prioritize tax-advantaged accounts in 2026 before chasing higher returns in other investments. The advice comes as contribution limits increased across several account types.

The 401(k) contribution limit for 2026 is $24,500. Workers aged 50 and older can add a catch-up contribution of $8,000. Those aged 60 to 63 qualify for a super catch-up of $11,250. Roth IRA limits are $7,500. HSA limits are $4,300 for individuals and $8,550 for families.

Advisors say capturing the full employer 401(k) match is the first step. An employer match represents a guaranteed 100 percent return on those contributions, which no market investment can reliably match.

The federal estate tax exemption rose to $15 million per individual in 2026, or $30 million for married couples. State-level estate or inheritance taxes may still apply depending on where a person lives.

Annual exclusion gifts allow individuals to transfer up to $19,000 per recipient tax-free in 2025, with $38,000 for married couples. Gifting appreciated assets can remove them from a taxable estate while avoiding capital gains taxes.

Tax-loss harvesting remains a useful tool for investors with taxable brokerage accounts. Selling losing positions to offset capital gains can reduce the tax bill at year-end, as long as investors avoid the wash sale rule.

JP Morgan Private Bank recommends reviewing estate documents, confirming beneficiaries, and updating life insurance policies as part of an annual financial review.

Advisors also stress the importance of protecting digital wealth. Strong passwords, two-factor authentication, and caution around phishing scams are basic steps that many investors overlook.

The most consistent wealth-building strategy, planners say, is automating contributions and staying invested through market volatility rather than trying to time the market.
