Scientists using artificial intelligence have designed a fully functional virus using DNA sequences that do not exist in nature, a development that has alarmed biosecurity experts and prompted calls for new oversight frameworks.
The AI models, known as Evo 1 and Evo 2, generated the viral genome by learning evolutionary design principles from existing biological data. When tested in a laboratory setting, the virus successfully killed bacteria, confirming that the AI-generated sequences were biologically active.
The findings, reported in early August 2026, have drawn sharp reactions from religious and ethical communities. Leaders in faith-based bioethics say the development crosses a line that requires immediate regulatory attention.
