Amazon Announces Drone Delivery Expansion to Nearly 500 US Cities
Amazon plans to expand its Prime Air drone delivery service to nearly 500 U.S. cities and towns by the end of 2026, up from its current limited footprint. The service delivers packages up to 5 pounds in as little as 30 minutes and is free for Prime members on orders over $50.
Amazon announced plans to expand its Prime Air drone delivery service to nearly 500 U.S. cities and towns by the end of 2026, a more than sixfold increase in its drone delivery operations.
The expansion targets suburban regions, avoiding high-density downtown areas with skyscrapers and major airports that pose operational risks. Key metro areas included in the rollout are Chicago, Atlanta, Cleveland, and Boise.
Drones are designed to carry packages weighing up to 5 pounds, which covers millions of items in Amazon's inventory. Each drone hub covers approximately 175 square miles, meaning multiple launching locations are required to serve a single large metropolitan area.
For Amazon Prime members, the service is free on orders exceeding $50. Smaller orders incur a $2.99 fee. Non-members are charged a flat fee of $4.99 for drone delivery.
The expansion is part of an ongoing competitive effort with Walmart and other companies, including DoorDash and Alphabet's Wing, to provide the fastest possible delivery times. Drone delivery currently handles only a fraction of Amazon's total annual package volume.
The company continues to face several challenges. Drones encounter physical obstacles including tree cover, complex landscaping, and backyard features like inflatable pools, which complicate the identification of safe drop zones. While Amazon has received FAA certification and waivers to fly beyond the pilot's line of sight, federal rules for broader beyond-the-horizon flights have not yet been finalized. Noise remains a recurring concern for residents near drone operation sites.
Amazon CEO Andy Jassy has said the company aims to deliver half a billion packages by the end of the decade using drone technology.
