Amazon Secures $17.5 Billion in Debt Financing to Expand AI Infrastructure and Cloud Capacity
Amazon raised $17.5 billion in debt financing in June 2026 to fund expansion of its AI infrastructure and cloud computing capacity. The move is part of a broader wave of capital raising by major technology companies to build the physical systems needed to run large AI models.

Amazon secured $17.5 billion in debt financing in June 2026 to fund the expansion of its AI infrastructure and cloud computing capacity, the company confirmed this week.
The financing is one of the largest single debt raises in the technology sector and reflects the enormous capital requirements of building and operating the data centers, power systems, and networking equipment needed to run large AI models at scale.
Amazon Web Services, the company's cloud division, has been investing heavily in custom AI chips and data center capacity to compete with Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud. The new financing will support construction of new facilities and the purchase of hardware, including Nvidia GPUs and Amazon's own Trainium and Inferentia chips.
Morgan Stanley forecast in June 2026 that global AI-related debt issuance will reach $570 billion for the year as companies look beyond equity markets to fund infrastructure at the pace the industry demands.
Amazon's raise follows similar moves by other major technology companies. KKR launched a $10 billion data center and power infrastructure venture called Helix Digital Infrastructure, backed by Nvidia and energy company Vistra. China announced a 2 trillion yuan, or approximately $295 billion, five-year plan to build a national grid of AI data centers using domestic technology.
The scale of investment has drawn scrutiny. A Reuters/Ipsos poll released June 11 found that 64% of Americans disapprove of the rapid expansion of AI-driven data centers, with 77% expressing concern about rising electricity costs tied to the buildout.
Amazon said it is committed to powering its data centers with renewable energy and has set targets for carbon neutrality across its operations.
