Anglican Cathedrals Face Financial Crisis as Over 80 Percent Report Funding Shortfalls

More than 80 percent of Anglican cathedrals in England are in financial peril, according to a June 2026 report from the think tank Theos. Cathedral deans have started lobbying Members of Parliament directly, seeking government support to prevent closures or severe service cuts.

The report found that cathedrals face a combination of rising maintenance costs for historic buildings, declining regular giving, and reduced income from tourism and events following the COVID-19 pandemic. Many cathedrals also provide significant community services, including food banks, mental health support, and youth programs, which add to their operating costs.

Cathedral leaders say the funding crisis is not just a religious issue but a cultural one. These buildings serve as community anchors, tourist destinations, and venues for civic events. Losing them or reducing their operations would affect far more than Sunday worshippers.

The Church of England has not yet announced a formal response to the Theos report. Some cathedral deans have proposed a dedicated government heritage fund, similar to programs that support other historic buildings in England.

The situation reflects a broader financial squeeze facing many faith institutions across the United Kingdom. Church attendance has declined steadily over the past two decades, reducing the base of regular donors. At the same time, the cost of maintaining centuries-old stone buildings has risen sharply.
