Anthropic Consulted Christian Leaders on AI Ethics for Claude Chatbot

Anthropic, the AI company behind the Claude chatbot, consulted Christian leaders and theologians as part of its effort to shape the moral framework guiding the system's behavior.

The company, valued at $380 billion, used a 29,000-word internal document called a "constitution" to guide Claude's responses. CEO Dario Amodei has said he is open to the possibility that Claude may possess some form of consciousness, a claim that drew sharp responses from Christian thinkers.

Albert Mohler, president of Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, called the idea of attributing moral agency or wellbeing to a chatbot a "deadly confusion." He argued that human beings, created in the image of God, are moral agents in a way that machines cannot be.

Mohler and others raised concerns about young people forming emotional attachments to AI systems. They also questioned who defines "real harm" in Anthropic's stated policy that Claude should never deceive users in ways that cause real harm.

The Pentagon separately expressed concern that Claude's built-in policy preferences could affect military applications.

The consultations reflect a broader trend of tech companies seeking religious and ethical input as AI systems become more capable and widely used.
