Anthropic announced on October 18, 2026, that it will commit 5 percent of its shares to a new entity called the Anthropic Public Benefit Fund, pending approval by its stockholders.

The fund is structured as a wholly-owned limited liability company rather than a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, a choice intended to allow greater flexibility in how distributions are made. Based on Anthropic's most recent valuation, the initial commitment is valued at approximately $48 billion.

The fund is designed to scale over time. For every 50 percent increase in the company's valuation above a designated baseline, the board has the discretion to contribute an additional 2 percent of shares to the fund. Anthropic has explicitly stated that none of the equity held within the fund will be used for political donations or lobbying efforts.

The primary objective of the fund is to address the broader societal impacts of artificial intelligence, including potential labor market instability caused by automation. Anthropic has already committed $200 million toward studying AI's impact on the job market. The company said the new fund provides a mechanism for bolder approaches, which may include large donations to traditional nonprofits or direct distributions to specific populations.

The initiative builds on existing philanthropic commitments by Anthropic's co-founders, who pledged 80 percent of their equity upon the company's founding. An internal equity donation match program is also participated in by approximately half of the company's employees. Combined with these prior commitments, approximately 20 percent of Anthropic's shares are now dedicated to public benefit purposes, not counting future valuation-based increases.

The announcement comes as Anthropic reportedly prepares for a potential November public offering with a valuation target of $1.5 trillion. Further details about the fund's governance and valuation milestones are expected in the months following the October 2026 announcement.
