Apple announced a major overhaul of its Siri assistant at its Worldwide Developers Conference on June 9, 2026, integrating Google's Gemini models to create a more conversational and context-aware AI experience called "Siri AI."

The announcement was part of a broader set of updates unveiled at WWDC 2026, which also included iOS 27, new Apple Intelligence features, and significant changes to parental controls.

Siri AI is designed to understand context across conversations, remember user preferences, and handle more complex multi-step requests than the previous version of Siri. The integration with Google's Gemini models gives Siri access to more powerful language understanding capabilities.

iOS 27 includes enhanced photo editing tools including Cleanup, Reframe, and Extend, which use AI to remove objects from photos, adjust framing, and expand the edges of images. AI-powered message replies and systemwide dictation improvements are also included.

New parental controls allow parents to manage app access, website restrictions, and contact lists for children, with default "Ask to Buy" and "Ask to Browse" settings for users under 13.

CEO Tim Cook announced at the conference that he will step down on September 1, 2026, handing leadership to Senior Vice President of Hardware Engineering John Ternus. Cook has led Apple since 2011, overseeing the company's growth from a $350 billion company to one worth more than $3 trillion.

"It has been the honor of my life to lead this company," Cook said. "John is the right person to take Apple into its next chapter."

Ternus has been at Apple since 2001 and has overseen the development of the iPhone, Mac, and Apple Silicon chip lines. He is widely respected within the company for his engineering expertise and leadership style.

The WWDC announcements come as Apple faces increasing competition in the AI assistant market from Google, Amazon, and Microsoft.
