Apple Brings AI Features to China Through Alibaba Qwen Integration, Developer Beta Starts November 4

Apple confirmed on October 31, 2026, that Alibaba's Qwen AI model will power Apple Intelligence features for users in mainland China. The announcement sets a timeline for bringing AI capabilities to one of Apple's largest markets after months of regulatory negotiations.

Developer testing of the Qwen-powered features begins November 4, 2026. The public release is scheduled for December through the iOS 27.3 update. The initial rollout is limited to iPhone models, specifically the iPhone 16 series, iPhone Duo, iPhone Air, iPhone 15 Pro, and iPhone 15 Pro Max. Support for iPad and Mac is planned but has no confirmed release date pending additional regulatory approvals.

Qwen will support three Apple Intelligence features in China: Siri, Writing Tools, and Visual Intelligence. Within Writing Tools, Qwen handles the Compose feature, which generates original content. Siri will use Qwen to respond to requests requiring broader knowledge beyond on-device capabilities.

The integration excludes Apple's next-generation Siri AI, announced at WWDC 2026, and other advanced agentic features. The China version of Apple Intelligence focuses on established capabilities including Live Translation, Clean Up, Genmoji, notification summaries, and Type to Siri.

Users must set both their device language and Siri language to English and Simplified Chinese to access the features. Qwen-powered functions require signing in with a Qwen account or using Sign in with Apple.

Alibaba stated that user requests and generated responses will not be used to train its models. Apple has not disclosed technical details about data routing or storage arrangements with Alibaba.

The partnership reflects Apple's approach of working with local AI providers in markets where its own models face regulatory barriers.
