Baylor University Black Gospel Archive Acquires Rare Los Angeles Collection Saved From Wildfire Threat

Baylor University's Black Gospel Archive acquired the Saviour Home Library in early 2026, a collection of rare LPs from the Los Angeles gospel scene that was rescued just before nearby wildfires threatened to destroy it.

The archive, which includes the Black Gospel Music Preservation Program, has operated for more than two decades and has been highlighted by CBS News and NPR for its work digitizing thousands of rare vinyl records, including 45s and 78s that were at risk of being lost to damage or neglect.

The Saviour Home Library adds a significant body of material from the West Coast gospel tradition, a region whose contributions to the genre have historically received less archival attention than those from Chicago, Detroit, and the American South.

The archive functions as a research-ready facility, hosting listening centers and partnering with institutions including the Smithsonian's National Museum of African American History and Culture. Researchers can access the digitized recordings on-site, and the program continues to expand its partnerships with universities and cultural institutions.

The Black Gospel Music Preservation Program focuses on the genre's "Golden Age" from 1945 to 1975, a period that produced some of the most influential recordings in American music history. Many of those recordings were pressed in small quantities and never commercially reissued, making physical preservation and digitization critical to their survival.

Baylor's archive has become one of the leading institutions for Black gospel music research in the country. The addition of the Saviour Home Library strengthens its holdings from the West Coast and provides scholars with new material for studying how gospel music developed differently across American regions.
