Black Catholic Men Gather in Birmingham for 24th Annual Leadership Conference

The 24th annual Fr. Chester P. Smith National Black Catholic Men's Conference was held October 15-18, 2026, in Birmingham, Alabama.

Themed "The Rock I Stand On," the event gathered Black Catholic men from across the United States to focus on spiritual leadership, the role of men as protectors and providers, and the connection between faith and social responsibility.

The conference honored the legacy of the late Father Chester P. Smith, a pioneering figure in Black Catholic ministry. Attendees participated in a Civil Rights Immersion Tour of Birmingham, a city central to the 1960s civil rights movement, and took part in a town hall debate on contemporary social and political issues.

Sessions addressed topics including fatherhood, community advocacy, and the responsibilities of Catholic men within their parishes and neighborhoods. Speakers encouraged attendees to take active roles in their families and local communities.

Birmingham was chosen as the host city in part because of its historical significance to the Black freedom struggle. The Sixteenth Street Baptist Church, site of the 1963 bombing that killed four young girls, is located in the city and was part of the immersion tour.
