Britain's National Grid Invests 1.75 Billion in AI Data Center Power

Britain's National Grid invested 1.75 billion dollars for a 35 percent stake in Joulent, an energy platform designed to supply power to AI data centers, according to reports published July 1, 2026.

The deal reflects the growing strain that AI computing is placing on energy infrastructure. Data centers running large AI models require enormous amounts of electricity, and existing power grids in many countries were not built to handle that level of demand.

Joulent specializes in connecting data centers to reliable power sources, including renewable energy. The National Grid's investment gives it a significant stake in a company positioned to benefit from the rapid expansion of AI infrastructure across Europe.

The move is part of a broader wave of energy investment tied to AI. Bloom Energy and Brookfield expanded their partnership to 25 billion dollars to deploy fuel cell technology for AI data centers. Samsung Group announced a 648 billion dollar decade-long investment plan in South Korea that includes AI data center construction.

In the United States, companies like Amazon are designing their own AI chips for consumer devices, while Tesla has reportedly shifted production lines to focus on Optimus robot manufacturing.

The National Grid's investment in Joulent signals that traditional energy utilities are positioning themselves as key players in the AI infrastructure buildout. Analysts say energy availability is becoming one of the main constraints on how quickly AI companies can expand their computing capacity.
