Pastor Angel Gonzalez and his wife, Iran Montes, were shot and killed outside their home in the Villas El Dorado neighborhood of Irapuato, Guanajuato, Mexico, on October 15, 2026.
The attack happened around 1:00 a.m. as the couple returned home after Gonzalez had officiated a funeral. Two gunmen approached their vehicle near the garage and opened fire at close range. Gonzalez died at the scene. Montes was transported by ambulance but died from her injuries before reaching the hospital.
The couple is survived by their two teenage children, Matthew, 18, and Dorothy, 17.
Mexican municipal police arrested a suspect shortly after the shooting. Authorities have not publicly identified the suspect and are still working to confirm a motive. Officials are currently treating the case as a robbery that turned fatal, though no final determination has been made.
Calvary Chapel leadership and the local congregation in Irapuato asked for prayers for the surviving children and the broader church community. In a statement, church leaders said they are holding onto their faith during the tragedy.
Guanajuato has seen ongoing violence tied to organized crime. Organizations such as Open Doors have previously noted that church leaders in parts of Mexico face risks when their community work is perceived as a threat by criminal groups.
The killings drew attention from Christian media outlets across the United States and Latin America, with many calling for prayer and increased awareness of the dangers faced by clergy in high-crime regions.
