Gospel legend Calvin Bridges is marking the 50th anniversary of his composition "I Can Go To God In Prayer" in 2026, a song that has remained a fixture in Black church worship for five decades.

The Journal of Gospel Music recognized the milestone in July, noting the song's enduring place in congregational worship across the country. "I Can Go To God In Prayer" has been recorded and performed by numerous artists since Bridges first wrote it in 1976.

Bridges' work represents a generation of gospel songwriters who shaped the sound of Black church music during the 1970s and 1980s. His compositions drew from the deep well of African American spiritual tradition while speaking to the everyday faith of churchgoers.

The anniversary comes as the gospel music industry is experiencing renewed attention to its historical roots. Baylor University's Black Gospel Archive has been working to digitize and preserve recordings from the "Golden Age of Gospel" spanning 1945 to 1975, ensuring that foundational works like those of Bridges remain accessible to future generations.

The 2026 gospel music calendar has been full of milestones. Tyscot Records is celebrating its own 50th anniversary this year, and the 41st Annual Stellar Gospel Music Awards aired on BET on August 30, hosted by Kirk Franklin.
