ChatGPT Market Share Falls Below 50 Percent for First Time

ChatGPT lost its majority share of the global AI assistant market in June 2026, dropping to 46.4 percent, the first time the product has fallen below 50 percent since its launch in late 2022.

Google Gemini has grown to 27.7 percent of the market, driven by its integration into Android devices and Google's suite of productivity tools. Anthropic's Claude holds 10.3 percent, a figure that has climbed steadily as the company has expanded access to its models.

The shift reflects a market that has matured rapidly. When ChatGPT launched, it had no direct competitors at scale. Now, users have multiple capable options, and many are choosing based on specific features, pricing, or integration with tools they already use.

OpenAI is not standing still. The company previewed GPT-5.6 for a late-June launch and added a "Record and Replay" function to its ChatGPT Business Codex app, allowing users to turn workflows into reusable automated tasks. The company is also preparing for an anticipated IPO in September 2026.

Competition is also coming from open-weight models. Zhipu AI released GLM-5.2 in June, an open-weight model that outperformed GPT-5.5 on the SWE-bench Pro coding benchmark. The model requires significant hardware to run locally, but its performance has drawn attention from developers looking for alternatives to proprietary systems.

Snap also entered the AI hardware space in June, unveiling "Specs" AR glasses at the AWE 2026 conference. Priced at $2,195, the glasses include dual Qualcomm processors and built-in connections to OpenAI and Google Gemini APIs.
