China's Galactic Energy Sends Pallas-1 Rocket to Orbit on Maiden Flight
Chinese commercial space company Galactic Energy successfully launched its Pallas-1 rocket to orbit on its first flight in early September 2026. The two-stage liquid-fueled rocket stands 52 meters tall and can carry roughly 7 metric tons to low Earth orbit. The company plans to make the first-stage booster reusable on future flights.
<p>Chinese commercial space company Galactic Energy successfully sent its Pallas-1 rocket to orbit on its maiden flight in early September 2026. The launch marks another step in China's effort to build reusable launch systems capable of competing for large satellite constellation contracts.</p>
<p>The two-stage liquid-fueled rocket stands about 52 meters tall and can carry roughly 7 metric tons to low Earth orbit. Galactic Energy did not attempt to recover the first-stage booster on the inaugural flight but said it intends to make the stage reusable on future missions.</p>
<p>Pallas-1 moves Galactic Energy into a heavier launch class than its existing Ceres-1 rocket, which is a smaller solid-fueled vehicle. The heavier capacity is needed to deploy large batches of satellites in a single mission, which is essential for building broadband constellations.</p>
<p>The rocket is modeled around the economics pioneered by SpaceX's Falcon 9: higher launch frequency, reusable boosters, and lower costs per mission. China's state and private launch companies are racing to support ambitious broadband constellations while building domestic alternatives to SpaceX's launch services.</p>
<p>Galactic Energy was founded in 2018 and has been one of the more active Chinese commercial launch startups. The company has completed multiple successful Ceres-1 missions and has been working toward the Pallas-1 debut for several years. A successful reusable version of Pallas-1 could significantly increase China's commercial launch capacity and intensify competition in the global satellite market.</p>
