Christianity Today Marks 70 Years With Special Issue Reflecting on Faith and the Future

Christianity Today turned 70 this year, and the magazine marked the occasion with a special September-October 2026 issue that traces its history and looks at what lies ahead for evangelical Christianity.

Billy Graham founded the magazine in 1956 as a serious theological journal aimed at educated Christians. Over seven decades it has covered everything from the civil rights movement to the rise of the religious right to debates over sexuality and gender in the church.

The anniversary issue includes essays from current and former editors, reflections from prominent theologians, and reporting on the state of the global church. Editors say the magazine has tried to hold together a commitment to orthodox Christian belief with honest journalism.

"We have never been a cheerleading publication," editor-in-chief Russell Moore wrote in the issue. "We have tried to tell the truth, even when it was uncomfortable."

The issue also addresses the challenges Christianity Today faces going forward, including declining print readership, the rise of social media as a source of religious information, and the polarization of American Christianity along political lines.

The magazine has navigated controversy in recent years, including a 2019 editorial calling for the removal of then-President Donald Trump that sparked a significant backlash from evangelical readers.

Christianity Today remains one of the most widely read evangelical publications in the United States, with a large digital audience.
