Chinese AI startup DeepSeek closed its first-ever external funding round in late May 2026, raising approximately $7 billion at a valuation of about $52 billion.
Founder Liang Wenfeng was the largest investor in the round, personally contributing approximately $3 billion. Tencent Holdings and CATL were the largest external investors. Other entities reportedly involved in discussions included the China Integrated Circuit Industry Investment Fund, NetEase, JD.com, IDG Capital, and Monolith Capital.
The round marked a significant shift for DeepSeek, which had previously maintained a strict policy against external fundraising, IPOs, and commercialization. The company had relied entirely on backing from High-Flyer Quant, a hedge fund also founded by Liang Wenfeng.
The decision to pursue external capital was driven largely by the need to remain competitive in the AI talent market, where incentive gaps for employees holding unvested options had become a pressure point compared to well-funded domestic rivals.
The capital is being deployed to build computing infrastructure, including a data center in Ulanqab, Inner Mongolia, to support model training. The funds are also being used to hire additional AI researchers and strengthen technical infrastructure, specifically to work around export controls on advanced semiconductors by using domestic Chinese AI chips.
By mid-July 2026, DeepSeek had entered preliminary discussions for a second funding round targeting a valuation of approximately $71 billion, a 37 percent increase over the valuation achieved in the initial round. A potential IPO has been discussed for 2027.
