Elon Musk has unveiled plans for Terafab, a large-scale AI chip manufacturing facility planned for Austin, Texas, that would produce chips for Tesla, SpaceX, and his artificial intelligence company xAI.

The project is intended to give Musk's companies greater control over their AI hardware supply chain and reduce dependence on Nvidia, which currently supplies most of the chips used to train and run large AI models. Terafab may use Intel's 14A manufacturing process, one of the most advanced chip fabrication technologies currently available.

Musk announced the project without providing a detailed timeline or cost estimate. He said the facility would be designed to produce chips at a scale large enough to support the AI ambitions of all three companies.

Tesla has been developing its own AI chips for years, primarily for use in its self-driving systems and the Dojo supercomputer. SpaceX uses AI for satellite operations and rocket guidance. xAI, which operates the Grok AI assistant, requires significant compute resources to train and run its models.

The announcement comes as the AI chip market is experiencing intense competition. Nvidia's H100 and B200 GPUs remain the dominant hardware for AI workloads, but Google, Amazon, Microsoft, and now Musk are all investing in custom silicon to reduce costs and improve performance.

Tesla separately increased its 2026 capital spending plan to over $25 billion, with the majority targeting self-driving technology, Optimus humanoid robots, and robotaxi services.

Industry analysts said Terafab is an ambitious project that would take years to build and bring to production. They noted that chip manufacturing is one of the most complex and capital-intensive industries in the world, and that new entrants face significant technical and logistical challenges.
