Equity Union Introduces Code of Conduct for Liturgical Singers in Churches and Synagogues

Equity, the UK union representing actors and entertainers, introduced a new code of conduct in August 2026 aimed at improving conditions for liturgical singers who work in churches and synagogues.

The code addresses longstanding complaints from singers about low pay, the absence of formal contracts, and reports of mistreatment by employers. Liturgical singers perform at religious services, often as paid professionals, but many have worked without the protections that apply to other performers.

Equity said the code sets minimum standards for pay, working hours, and professional treatment. It also establishes a process for singers to raise complaints without fear of losing their positions.

The move was welcomed by many in the religious music community. Some singers said they had worked for years without contracts and had little recourse when disputes arose with church employers.

Religious institutions responded with mixed reactions. Some welcomed the clarity the code provides, while others expressed concern about the administrative burden of formalizing arrangements that have traditionally been informal.

The code applies to singers working in any religious setting, regardless of denomination or faith tradition. Equity said it would work with religious organizations to help them understand and implement the new standards.

The initiative reflects a broader push by UK unions to extend labor protections to workers in sectors that have historically operated outside formal employment frameworks.
