Google introduced the Gemini Agent in October 2026, an AI system designed to function as a universal work colleague within Google Workspace, complete with its own identity and the ability to manage complex multi-step workflows.
The Gemini Agent can be assigned tasks across Google's suite of productivity tools, including Gmail, Docs, Sheets, and Calendar. It can draft emails, summarize documents, schedule meetings, and complete multi-step processes without requiring the user to manage each step manually.
The agent has its own Workspace identity, meaning it can be added to team projects, assigned tasks, and tracked like a human collaborator. Google said this design makes it easier for teams to integrate AI into existing workflows without changing how they organize their work.
The launch is part of a broader industry shift toward "agentic" AI systems that can take autonomous action rather than simply responding to individual prompts. Microsoft made a similar move with its Copilot Credits system, which bills for agentic tasks separately from standard AI usage.
Google said the Gemini Agent is designed with privacy controls that allow administrators to set limits on what data the agent can access and what actions it can take. Enterprise customers can configure the agent's permissions based on their security requirements.
The product is being rolled out to Google Workspace enterprise customers first, with broader availability expected in early 2027.
