Gospel Music Industry Marks Milestone Month With Stellar Awards and New Signings
August 2026 has been a busy month for the gospel music industry, anchored by the 41st Annual Stellar Gospel Music Awards on August 15 in Charlotte, North Carolina. The month also brought new artist signings and continued recognition for Baylor University's Black Gospel Music Preservation Program.
August 2026 has been a busy month for the gospel music industry, anchored by the 41st Annual Stellar Gospel Music Awards on August 15 at the Spectrum Center in Charlotte, North Carolina.
The ceremony featured performances from Kierra Sheard, Jekalyn Carr, John P. Kee, Le'Andria Johnson, Tye Tribbett, PJ Morton, Melvin Crispell III, Lisa Knowles-Smith and The Brown Singers, and Vincent Bohanan and SOV. Tasha Cobbs Leonard received the Aretha Franklin Icon Award, and Pastor Mike Jr. received the Thomas A. Dorsey Most Notable Achievement Award.
On August 13, ASCAP and Motown Gospel hosted a Stellar Awards Nominee Mixer in Charlotte to celebrate the industry's most recognized names ahead of the ceremony.
The month also brought new artist signings. Tehillah Music Group announced the addition of Courtney Franklin to its roster on August 4. Earlier in the summer, Marvin Sapp partnered with Roc Nation for the distribution of his 17th album, Restoration, and Koryn Hawthorne signed with Motown Gospel.
Baylor University's Black Gospel Music Preservation Program continued to draw national attention from outlets including CBS News and NPR. The project has digitized thousands of vinyl records from the Golden Age of Gospel, covering 1945 to 1975, and remains a key resource for scholars and the public.
The industry's activity coincides with leadership transitions in major denominations. The Church of God in Christ and the Pentecostal Assemblies of the World both underwent leadership changes and held significant national conventions this summer.
