Joby Aviation Acquires Resonant Sciences for $500 Million to Expand Defense Business

Joby Aviation announced on August 11, 2026, that it will acquire Resonant Sciences, a Dayton, Ohio-based defense technology company, for approximately $500 million.

The deal is structured as $450 million in cash and $50 million in Joby common stock. It is expected to close in the first half of 2027, subject to regulatory review.

Resonant Sciences, founded in 2015, employs about 250 people and reported more than $100 million in trailing-twelve-month revenue with roughly 40 percent year-over-year growth. More than 90 percent of its workforce holds security clearances. The company operates 105,000 square feet of space in Dayton and has an additional 125,000-square-foot facility under construction.

Upon closing, Resonant Sciences will operate as Joby's dedicated defense business unit, continuing under its own name. J. Micah North, co-founder and CEO of Resonant Sciences, will lead the division.

The acquisition combines Joby's aircraft, propulsion, and autonomy technologies with Resonant's expertise in radio frequency sensing, signal processing, and low-observability aircraft design. Joby said the deal will allow its commercial team to stay focused on certifying and manufacturing its electric air taxi.

Combined with Joby's existing facilities in the Dayton area, the acquisition will give the company approximately 1 million square feet of manufacturing, integration, and testing space.

Joby has been developing electric vertical take-off and landing aircraft for commercial air taxi service. The company has also pursued defense contracts as a secondary revenue stream. The Resonant Sciences acquisition significantly expands that defense footprint.
