Born on June 16, 1930, in New Hebron, Mississippi, Perkins grew up in a Black sharecropping family in a segregated environment. He co-founded the Christian Community Development Association (CCDA) in 1989 and authored 17 books, including "Let Justice Roll Down" (1976).
