John P. Kee was among the performers at the ceremony, joining a lineup that included Kierra Sheard, Jekalyn Carr, Le'Andria Johnson, Tye Tribbett, PJ Morton, Melvin Crispell III, Lisa Knowles-Smith and The Brown Singers, and Vincent Bohanan and SOV.
Tasha Cobbs Leonard received the Aretha Franklin Icon Award at the ceremony. Pastor Mike Jr. was presented with the Thomas A. Dorsey Most Notable Achievement Award.
The Stellar Gospel Music Awards are produced by Central City Productions and have recognized excellence in gospel music since 1985. The Charlotte venue, the Spectrum Center, seats more than 19,000 people.
Earlier in the summer, the gospel music industry gathered in Nashville for the BMI Trailblazers of Gospel Music Awards, where Kierra Sheard received the BMI Impact Award and was named BMI Gospel Songwriter of the Year, sharing the title with J Drew Sheard II and Kerry Douglas.
At the BET Awards, the Dr. Bobby Jones Best Gospel/Inspirational Award went to Lecrae, Killer Mike, and T.I. for their song "Headphones."
