Journalism Group Drops Evangelical Label, Renames Itself Christian Communicators Network

The Evangelical Press Association voted on October 7 to rename itself the Christian Communicators Network, ending more than 75 years under its original name. The vote passed with 57 percent in favor, with board members saying the word evangelical has taken on political meanings that distract from the group's theological mission.

The Evangelical Press Association has a new name. Members voted on October 7, 2026, to rename the organization the Christian Communicators Network, closing a chapter that began more than 75 years ago.

The vote was conducted online and results were announced October 8. Out of 664 eligible voters, 244 cast ballots. The resolution passed 140 to 102, with two abstentions, representing about 57 percent of those who voted.

Board leadership said the word "evangelical" has accumulated political and cultural meanings that can obscure the group's core theological commitments. By switching to "Christian," they aimed for a descriptor more broadly understood. "Communicators" was chosen to reflect the modern membership, which includes podcasters and digital editors alongside traditional journalists. "Network" was seen as a more accurate description of the group's structure than "Association."

EPA board president Dwight Widaman said the rebranding does not change the organization's mission or beliefs. Its statement of faith, membership standards, and code of ethics remain unchanged.

The proposal sparked significant debate among members. Supporters said the new name would make the group more accessible to professionals who share its theological commitments but avoid the evangelical label. Opponents worried the change could be seen as capitulating to political pressure or distancing the group from its history.

The organization will now transition its governing documents, branding, and digital assets to reflect the new name.
