Churches in Macon, Georgia, Alexandria, Louisiana, Denver, Colorado, and Miami-Dade County, Florida, held similar events this summer, offering backpacks, supplies, and hair services to students and families.
In Macon, Mikado Baptist Church partnered with eight local barbers to provide free haircuts, school supplies, and lunch. Church leaders said it was their first such event and they plan to continue it due to high community demand.
In Alexandria, True Vine Missionary Baptist Church held its fourth annual Community Cutz event in collaboration with the Southern University Rapides Alumni Chapter, serving approximately 150 children.
Organizers at multiple churches said the events are designed to reduce the financial pressure on parents during one of the most expensive times of the year. Families are expected to spend nearly $900 per child on back-to-school items in 2026, with total K-12 spending projected to reach a record $43.3 billion nationally.
Church leaders said the outreach reflects a core part of their mission: meeting practical needs in the community while building relationships with families who may not otherwise connect with a congregation.
