King Charles III will formally open the 12th General Synod of the Church of England on November 17, 2026, marking the first time he has addressed the body as monarch.

The ceremony begins with a service at Westminster Abbey, followed by an inauguration at Church House in Westminster. The Archbishop of Canterbury, Sarah Mullally, and the Archbishop of York, Stephen Cottrell, will also deliver remarks.

The General Synod is the Church of England's national governing assembly. It was established in 1970 and meets several times a year to debate and decide on matters of doctrine, worship, and church policy. The 12th Synod includes 487 members, roughly half of whom are newly elected and will serve a five-year term through 2031.

The previous inauguration, in November 2021, was conducted by the Earl of Wessex on behalf of Queen Elizabeth II, the only time in the Synod's history that the late Queen had missed the five-yearly visit.

The new Synod's early agenda includes safeguarding updates, the challenge of maintaining aging church buildings, clergy wellbeing, and annual budget discussions.

The inauguration also marks the first Synod opening under Archbishop Mullally, who became Archbishop of Canterbury earlier in 2026.
