Los Angeles Black Church Leaders Host City-Wide Revival to Reach Younger Generations

Black church leaders in Los Angeles gathered for a city-wide revival at the historic Mt. Moriah Missionary Baptist Church in September 2026, with a focus on celebrating Black faith and addressing the generational challenge of keeping the church alive for younger members.

The revival drew pastors and congregants from across the Los Angeles area. Leaders discussed how to maintain the church's influence as younger Black Americans gain access to secular opportunities that previous generations did not have.

The event reflects a broader conversation happening in Black churches nationwide. Gallup data shows that Black adult church membership has declined by roughly 20 percentage points over the past two decades. About 47 percent of Black adults believe the church has lost influence since the civil rights era.

Despite those trends, Black Protestants continue to report high levels of religious engagement. About 66 percent participate in services at least monthly, according to recent surveys.

Pastors at the revival emphasized the church's continued role as a hub for healthcare advocacy, civic engagement, and spiritual support. Several speakers called on the church to "stand in the gap" for the community by expanding outreach in education and health.

The Los Angeles revival was one of several events in September 2026 focused on the future of the Black church. Washington, D.C. hosted the "Awaken The Sleeping Giant Black Church Symposium" and the "DC Faith-Based Legacy Challenge" at Zion Baptist Church, both aimed at discussing the institution's path forward.

Urban gentrification has added pressure to many Black congregations. The NBCI reports that over 261,000 Black residents have been displaced across 523 neighborhoods, leading to church closures and property sales in some communities.
