Meta's Messenger.com Shuts Down, Redirecting Users to Facebook Messages

Meta's Messenger.com Shuts Down, Redirecting Users to Facebook Messages

Meta has shut down Messenger.com, the standalone website that allowed users to access their Facebook messages without opening the main Facebook platform.

Users who visit messenger.com are now automatically redirected to facebook.com/messages. The iOS and Android Messenger apps remain fully functional and are not affected by the change.

The shutdown has a significant impact on users who do not have a Facebook account. Previously, Messenger allowed people to create accounts using just a phone number, without needing a Facebook profile. Those users can no longer access their message history through a web browser.

Meta has not provided a detailed explanation for the decision. The company has been consolidating its messaging infrastructure across Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp in recent years, and the shutdown of the standalone Messenger website appears to be part of that broader effort.

The move drew criticism from users who preferred the cleaner interface of Messenger.com and used it to keep their messaging separate from the main Facebook feed. Some users said they relied on the standalone site for work communications.

"I used Messenger.com specifically because I did not want to be on Facebook," wrote one user on a tech forum. "Now I have no choice but to use the main site."

Meta's messaging services collectively handle billions of messages per day. The company has been working to integrate end-to-end encryption across its platforms, a project that has taken several years to complete.

The shutdown of Messenger.com is the latest in a series of changes Meta has made to its product lineup as it focuses resources on AI development and its metaverse ambitions. The company announced plans to cut approximately 8,000 jobs in recent months as part of a broader restructuring.
