The National Black Church Initiative (NBCI), a coalition representing 150,000 churches and 27.7 million members, has launched two new health campaigns in June 2026 targeting maternal mortality and Parkinson's disease awareness in Black communities.

The "Beautiful Black Babies Campaign" focuses on reducing maternal and infant mortality rates, which remain disproportionately high among Black women in the United States. The campaign provides churches with educational materials, connects congregations with local health providers, and encourages prenatal care and postpartum support.

The NBCI also launched the African American Parkinson's Patients Advocacy Organization (AAPPAO), which aims to increase awareness of Parkinson's disease in Black communities, where the condition is often underdiagnosed. The organization is working to connect patients with clinical trials and specialist care.

"When knowledge gaps are this widespread, the consequences are real," said a spokesperson for the initiative. "The church is uniquely positioned to reach people where they are."

The NBCI has set a June 15, 2026, deadline for member churches to renew their affiliation. The organization uses its network to distribute resources on housing, education, technology, and health equity to congregations across the country.

In addition to health work, the NBCI maintains a color-coded threat system to monitor security risks for its member churches. The current threat level is listed as "Elevated," following a series of arson attacks on Black churches in Louisiana earlier this month.

The organization has also been active in political advocacy, issuing endorsements for candidates in several local and state races ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.

Founded to address racial disparities across multiple sectors, the NBCI operates as one of the largest faith-based coalitions in the United States. Its health initiatives are part of a broader strategy to use the church as a platform for community wellness.
