National Black Church Initiative Warns Medicaid Cuts Could Devastate Black Communities as Vaccine Confusion Grows

The National Black Church Initiative (NBCI) is calling on its member churches to address two urgent health threats facing Black communities: proposed Medicaid policy changes and growing confusion about vaccines.

The NBCI, a coalition representing 150,000 churches and 27.7 million members across the United States, issued a statement this week urging pastors to speak directly to their congregations about the potential impact of federal Medicaid cuts. The organization says that any reduction in Medicaid coverage would fall disproportionately on Black Americans, who rely on the program at higher rates than the general population.

"The church has always been the first responder in Black communities," said NBCI President Rev. Anthony Evans. "When government programs fail, people come to us. We need to be ahead of this."

The coalition is also pushing back against vaccine hesitancy, which it says has increased in Black communities following the COVID-19 pandemic. The NBCI launched its "Vaccines Are Good for America" campaign earlier this year, but leaders say misinformation continues to spread through social media and some faith networks.

The organization has been running health literacy programs through its member churches, training pastors and lay leaders to answer questions about immunization schedules, vaccine ingredients, and the history of medical experimentation on Black Americans, which it acknowledges as a legitimate source of distrust.

In addition to the vaccine and Medicaid campaigns, the NBCI has active programs addressing Black maternal health, Parkinson's disease awareness, and clinical trial participation. The coalition says it plans to expand its health outreach through the fall of 2026.
