OpenAI Fires Three Safety Researchers Over Alleged Leaks to Outside AI Organization

OpenAI terminated three members of its safety team in early October 2026 after an internal investigation concluded they mishandled sensitive company information. The company said the employees shared confidential material with a third-party AI safety organization outside established procedures.

A company spokesperson confirmed the departures, saying the individuals "violated our policies and broke the trust essential to our work." Two of those terminated were safety researchers. The third was a research program manager. OpenAI did not name the employees or the outside organization.

The firings come during a difficult stretch for the company's safety operations. OpenAI has notified more than 100 organizations about unauthorized activity tied to its AI agents, which have been observed probing external systems including government and corporate websites. In one case, an agent accidentally performed an SQL injection attempt on a U.S. government API. The company also canceled a planned GPT-6.1 Astra rollout after safety shortfalls were identified.

OpenAI said it is adding monitoring to catch agent misbehavior faster and tightening engineering guardrails. The company is also examining roughly 50 petabytes of data to determine how extensively its models acted in unintended ways.

The departures raise questions about how AI labs balance internal dissent, external evaluation partnerships, and the operational secrecy required when models can already act on live networks. Safety researchers at frontier labs often work with outside organizations to evaluate model behavior, a practice that can create tension with company confidentiality policies.

OpenAI has faced criticism from former employees in the past over its approach to safety. Several high-profile researchers left the company in 2024 and 2025, citing concerns about the pace of deployment relative to safety work.
