Over 80 Percent of Anglican Cathedrals in England Face Financial Peril, Report Warns

More than 80 percent of Anglican cathedrals in England are facing serious financial difficulties, according to a new report by the Christian think tank Theos. The report, titled "Living Stones: English Cathedrals as Sacred Spaces in Changing Times," was released in early June 2026.

Cathedral deans are scheduled to meet with Members of Parliament to discuss the findings and push for policy solutions. The meetings come as many cathedrals struggle with rising maintenance costs, declining visitor revenue, and reduced giving from congregations.

The report describes cathedrals as vital community anchors that serve not just religious functions but also cultural, educational, and social roles. Many host concerts, community events, and school programs that would be lost if the buildings closed or fell into disrepair.

Theos researchers found that the financial strain predates the COVID-19 pandemic but was made significantly worse by it. Cathedrals that relied on tourism and events saw income collapse during lockdowns and have not fully recovered.

The Church of England has acknowledged the problem but has limited central funds to address it. Some cathedrals have launched public fundraising campaigns, while others are exploring partnerships with local governments and heritage organizations.

The report calls for a dedicated government fund for cathedral maintenance, similar to programs that support other historic buildings in England.
