PAW Elects Bishop Richard D. Howell Jr. as New Presiding Prelate
The Pentecostal Assemblies of the World has appointed Bishop Richard D. Howell Jr. as its new Presiding Prelate. Howell, the longtime pastor of Shiloh Temple International Ministries in Minneapolis, leads one of the largest Apostolic Pentecostal denominations in the country. The appointment marks a new chapter for the PAW as it enters its second century of ministry.
The Pentecostal Assemblies of the World (PAW) has named Bishop Richard D. Howell Jr. as its new Presiding Prelate, along with a new executive leadership team. Howell has served as senior pastor of Shiloh Temple International Ministries in Minneapolis for many years and is widely known within Apostolic Pentecostal circles.
The PAW is one of the oldest and largest Apostolic Pentecostal denominations in the United States. Founded in 1906, the organization has a predominantly African American membership and a global reach that extends to dozens of countries.
Howell's election was confirmed at the denomination's annual convocation. Delegates from across the country voted to install him and the new leadership team, which includes bishops and elders from several regions.
In his first address as Presiding Prelate, Howell said he planned to focus on church planting, youth engagement, and international missions. He acknowledged the challenges facing the denomination, including declining membership in some regions and the need to connect with younger generations.
Shiloh Temple, the church Howell has led in Minneapolis, is known for its community outreach programs and its role in the city's North Side neighborhood. Under his leadership, the church expanded its food pantry, job training programs, and after-school services.
The PAW's leadership transition comes as many historically Black denominations are navigating questions about succession, relevance, and growth. Observers said Howell's background in urban ministry and community development positions him well to address those challenges.
