Portland Advances Anti-Discrimination Protections for Polyamorous Families

Portland, Oregon has advanced anti-discrimination protections for polyamorous families, making it the largest U.S. City to do so. This policy, part of a larger ordinance upholding LGBTQ+ rights, allows individuals to sue over discrimination related to employment, housing, and other areas based on their "family or relationship structure."

The new policy passed by Portland City Council explicitly extends existing LGBTQ+ protections and enables claims for discrimination based on "relationship structure." No formal marriage contracts are required for protections. Portland may soon be followed by similar policies in Seattle.

Brett Chamberlain, director of OPEN (Organization for Polyamory and Ethical Non-Monogamy), explains the strategic approach: Start with "receptive" cities like Portland/Seattle, avoid areas where "conservative legislatures might preempt" action, and recognize that polyamory still faces social stigma, even in liberal areas.

This strategy mirrors past LGBTQ+ advocacy tactics, including cultural normalization through media. Chamberlain acknowledges "there are people in Portland who don't feel comfortable talking about their non-monogamous identity publicly."

The policy raises constitutional questions about municipal authority vs. State preemptive legislation. Similar protections have been adopted in other cities like Oakland, California, and Cambridge, Massachusetts.
