Qualcomm Unveils Dual 2nm Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Chips Built for Agentic AI on Smartphones

Qualcomm unveiled two new 2nm mobile chips at its Snapdragon Summit in Hawaii on September 23, 2026: the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 and the Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6. The Extreme variant can run 30-billion-parameter AI models offline, marking a shift toward autonomous AI processing directly on smartphones.

Qualcomm unveiled two new mobile chips at its Snapdragon Summit in Hawaii on September 23, 2026, introducing the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 and the Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6. Both are built on TSMC's 2nm process node, the first time Qualcomm has launched two distinct flagship chips in nine years.

The 2nm process uses Gate-All-Around FET nanosheet technology, which improves transistor density, performance, and power efficiency compared to previous 3nm designs.

The standard Gen 6 targets ultra-premium smartphones. It features an eight-core Oryon CPU with a 5.00 GHz prime core and 4.00 GHz performance cores. The Extreme Gen 6 is designed for the top of the Android market and adds superior GPU, NPU, and memory specifications for advanced AI and professional video workloads.

Both chips use a new cache architecture called FlexCache, which replaces fixed-partition L2 caches with a single shared pool. This reduces latency for agentic AI workflows, where an AI agent perceives context, calls tools, and executes actions in sequence. All eight Oryon cores can access the cache dynamically, cutting down on the cache misses that slow autonomous agents.

The Extreme Gen 6 supports on-device 30-billion-parameter Mixture-of-Experts models. It achieves this through 50 percent larger shared NPU memory and support for high-bandwidth LPDDR6 memory, which keeps expert weights in fast cache rather than fetching them from main memory.

Xiaomi confirmed the Xiaomi 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max as the first devices to launch with the new chips. Motorola announced the Signature 27, powered by the Extreme Gen 6. First devices are expected in late 2026, with a broader rollout in early 2027.

Analysts note that the 50 percent increase in wafer costs for the 2nm process will likely push retail prices for flagship Android phones higher in 2027.
