Rev. Dr. Adolphus Lacey Calls on Black Church Leaders to Pursue AI Training for Underserved Communities

The Rev. Dr. Adolphus Lacey of Bethany Baptist Church published an op-ed on October 19, 2026, calling on Black church leaders to pursue training in artificial intelligence.

Lacey cited a report titled "Faith, Community and AI," which found that millions of people now use chatbots for religious study, prayer guidance, and spiritual support. He argued that if faith leaders do not engage with AI development, underserved communities risk being left out of decisions that will shape how these tools work.

"The Black church has always been at the center of community life," Lacey wrote. "That role does not stop at the sanctuary door. It extends to every space where our people are seeking answers."

Lacey encouraged pastors and ministry leaders to attend AI literacy programs, partner with technology organizations, and advocate for ethical AI standards that reflect the values of their congregations.

His op-ed was published in the Post News Group and drew responses from other faith leaders who said they shared his concerns about the pace of AI adoption and the lack of diverse voices in the field.

The piece comes as several denominations have begun discussing how to address AI in their ministry guidelines and ethical frameworks.
