Roblox Introduces Age-Based Account Categories to Protect Young Users

Roblox announced in April 2026 that it will introduce age-based account categories to tighten safety controls for younger users.

The two categories are called "Kids" and "Select." The Kids category will apply stricter content filters and limit the types of experiences younger users can access. The Select category will offer more options for older users while still maintaining safety guardrails.

The change reflects growing pressure on online platforms to do more to protect minors. Greece announced this month that it will ban social media use for children under 15 starting January 1, 2027, citing concerns about anxiety, sleep disruption, and addictive platform design.

Roblox has more than 80 million daily active users, a large portion of whom are children and teenagers. The platform has faced criticism in the past for allowing inappropriate content and for making it difficult for parents to monitor their children's activity.

The age-based categories are part of a broader industry shift toward explicit age segmentation and stricter product design for younger audiences. Other platforms, including YouTube and TikTok, have also introduced age-specific features in recent years.

Roblox said the changes will roll out gradually over the coming months. Parents will be able to set account categories for their children and receive notifications about their activity.

The U.S. Senate Commerce Committee also scheduled a markup in April for the Stop the Scroll Act, which would impose new restrictions on social media platforms to protect minors.
