SALT LAKE CITY — The Salt Lake Temple will open its doors to the public in April 2027, marking the first time in 134 years that non-members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints will be able to tour the historic building.

President Dallin H. Oaks made the announcement during the October 2026 General Conference, held October 3-4 at the Conference Center in Salt Lake City. The temple has been closed for years of extensive renovation work.

The Salt Lake Temple is one of the most recognized religious buildings in the United States. Construction began in 1853 and took 40 years to complete. The building has been undergoing a major seismic retrofit and restoration project.

Church leaders said the public open house will give visitors a rare look inside the temple before it is rededicated for sacred ordinances. Similar open houses have been held for other temples before their dedication.

The announcement came during a conference that also featured messages on integrity, the importance of covenants, and the universality of the gospel. President Oaks spoke on the gospel being for all people, regardless of background.

Other announcements from the conference included a new video series called "Dedicate," featuring young adults from around the world testifying of temple covenants, and a film called "Unshaken" documenting the Salt Lake Temple renovations.

Church officials have not yet released specific dates for the April 2027 open house or details on how the public can register for tours.
