Snap Cuts 1,000 Jobs as CEO Cites AI Reducing Need for Repetitive Work

Snap announced it is cutting approximately 1,000 jobs, about 16% of its total workforce, with CEO Evan Spiegel citing AI advancements as a key factor.

Spiegel said AI tools now handle many repetitive tasks that previously required human workers, allowing the company to operate more efficiently with a smaller team.

The announcement reflects a broader trend across the tech industry. Employers in multiple sectors anticipate AI will shrink their workforces, particularly in service, supply chain operations, and software engineering.

A study cited by MIT Technology Review found that employment for software developers aged 22 to 25 has fallen nearly 20% since 2022, a period that coincides with rapid AI adoption in coding and development workflows.

Snap's cuts come as the company faces pressure to improve profitability. The social media platform has struggled to grow revenue at the pace of larger competitors like Meta and TikTok.

The layoffs are expected to take effect over the coming weeks. Snap said it would provide severance and support to affected employees.
