Snap Cuts 1,000 Jobs as CEO Cites AI Reducing Repetitive Work

Snap is cutting about 1,000 jobs, CEO Evan Spiegel announced in April 2026. The layoffs represent 16 percent of the company's workforce.

Spiegel said AI advancements are reducing the need for roles focused on repetitive tasks. The company is also closing more than 300 open positions it had planned to fill.

The announcement reflects a broader pattern across the technology industry. A Gallup report released in April found that half of U.S. workers now use AI, with frequent users reporting improved productivity. But the transformation of work has been uneven, with some roles disappearing faster than others.

Snap's cuts come as the company faces pressure to improve profitability. The social media platform has struggled to grow revenue at the pace investors expect, and the company has gone through multiple rounds of layoffs in recent years.

AI is also reshaping how companies approach hiring. Startups like Mercor and Handshake are seeing revenue surge as AI companies spend more on sourcing and organizing human labor for model training and evaluation, a sign that some new roles are emerging even as others disappear.

Google announced in April that it is funding new research and training programs to prepare workers for the AI economy. The company said it aims to shape the conversation around AI and jobs as the technology continues to change the workforce.
