SAN FRANCISCO — Snap launched its Specs augmented reality glasses on June 16, priced at $2,195, in what the company described as its most consumer-ready hardware product to date.

The glasses run AI-powered features on the device itself, without requiring a constant connection to a phone or cloud server. Snap says the design is meant for everyday use, not just developer experimentation, a distinction the company has struggled to make with previous hardware attempts.

Specs can overlay digital information on the physical world, respond to voice commands, and integrate with Snapchat's camera and social features. Snap also released new developer tools alongside the glasses, aiming to build an ecosystem of third-party applications.

The launch puts Snap in direct competition with Meta, which has sold millions of its Ray-Ban smart glasses, and Apple, whose Vision Pro headset targets a higher-end market. Google is also working on a new generation of AR hardware.

The $2,195 price point is steep for a consumer product, and analysts say it will limit early adoption to enthusiasts and professionals. Snap has not disclosed pre-order numbers.

The Specs launch is part of a broader wave of AI hardware hitting the market in 2026. Pinterest introduced an "Ask Pinterest" AI shopping app the same week, and several startups are racing to put AI assistants into earbuds, rings, and other wearable devices. Investors and companies are betting that the next major computing platform will be worn, not carried.
