SpaceX Seeks 40 Billion Dollars in Debt Financing to Buy Nvidia AI Chips
SpaceX is in early discussions to raise 40 billion dollars in debt financing to purchase Nvidia artificial intelligence chips, according to reports from October 2026. The proposed deal would include 10 billion dollars in bank loans and 30 billion dollars in investment-grade debt, with Apollo Global Management expected to lead the financing.
SpaceX is seeking to raise 40 billion dollars in debt financing to fund a large purchase of Nvidia artificial intelligence chips, according to reports published in early October 2026. The deal is still in early discussions and has not been finalized.
The proposed structure includes 10 billion dollars in bank loans and 30 billion dollars in investment-grade debt. Apollo Global Management is expected to lead the financing effort and syndicate the debt to a broader pool of investors. Pacific Investment Management Co. is also reported to be involved in early-stage talks.
The move reflects a broader trend in the technology industry, where companies are treating GPU clusters as long-lived capital assets, similar to aircraft or power plants, and financing them with specialized debt vehicles rather than corporate balance sheets. Morgan Stanley has estimated the AI infrastructure sector will need 1.5 trillion dollars in external financing by 2028.
SpaceX reported capital expenditures of 18.37 billion dollars in the second quarter of 2026, with 15.83 billion of that going to artificial intelligence. The company posted quarterly revenue of 7.81 billion dollars but recorded a net loss of 541 million dollars for the period.
Elon Musk has said SpaceX's AI infrastructure strategy is built exclusively around Nvidia. Musk's separate AI venture, xAI, is also scaling its computing capacity, with plans to deploy hundreds of thousands of Nvidia GB200 and GB300 chips at its Memphis data center before the end of 2026.
