Stripe has reached a deal to acquire OpenRouter, an AI gateway startup, for a valuation exceeding $7 billion, according to reports from Bloomberg and TechCrunch published in mid-August 2026. Stripe has declined to comment officially.

OpenRouter operates as a unified interface that allows developers to access more than 400 AI models from over 60 providers through a single API. The platform lets developers switch between models to optimize for performance, cost, and specific task requirements, reducing dependence on any single AI vendor.

The reported acquisition price marks a more than fivefold increase from the $1.3 billion valuation OpenRouter received during its $113 million Series B funding round in May 2026. OpenRouter CEO Alex Atallah has previously described the company as the "Stripe for AI" because of its role in simplifying AI model integration.

The deal complements Stripe's earlier acquisition of Metronome, a usage-based metering and billing company. Together, the two assets give Stripe control over the full lifecycle of an AI request: OpenRouter handles model selection and routing, while the combined infrastructure manages metering and billing.

OpenRouter's investor base includes Sequoia, Andreessen Horowitz, Menlo Ventures, and Alphabet's Capital G.

Industry analysts note that a significant portion of enterprise token usage on the OpenRouter platform involves models of Chinese origin, which may introduce regulatory and compliance considerations for Stripe as the new operator.

The acquisition reflects intense investor demand for AI infrastructure assets, with valuations rising sharply as companies race to build the plumbing that supports the broader AI ecosystem.
