Trump Administration Expands Religious Freedom Protections in Healthcare

The Trump administration released new regulations this week that expand religious freedom protections for healthcare workers and institutions. The rules give providers broader grounds to decline participation in procedures they say conflict with their faith.

The regulations build on existing conscience protection laws. Under the new rules, healthcare workers can refuse to perform or assist with abortions, gender transition procedures, and other services they object to on religious or moral grounds. Employers are required to accommodate those objections without penalizing workers.

Supporters say the rules protect doctors, nurses, and other providers from being forced to violate their beliefs. The Catholic Medical Association and other faith-based healthcare groups praised the announcement.

Critics argue the rules could harm patients, particularly in areas with limited healthcare options. The American Civil Liberties Union said it plans to challenge the regulations in court.

The rules apply to any healthcare entity that receives federal funding, which includes most hospitals and clinics in the country. The administration said enforcement will be handled through the Department of Health and Human Services Office for Civil Rights.

This is the second major religious freedom action from the administration this month. Earlier, the White House released a report recommending stronger protections for faith-based organizations in federal contracting.

The regulations take effect in 90 days, pending any legal challenges.
