Waymo announced in July 2026 that it will launch fully driverless rides in four additional U.S. cities: Las Vegas, San Diego, Denver, and Tampa. The expansion builds on the company's existing operations in San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Phoenix.

Waymo One, the company's commercial robotaxi service, has been operating in Phoenix since 2020 and expanded to San Francisco in 2023. The service uses a fleet of Jaguar I-PACE electric vehicles equipped with cameras, radar, and lidar sensors. A human safety driver is no longer present in the vehicle during commercial rides.

Las Vegas is the first of the four new cities to receive service. Waymo began offering driverless rides there in early July, initially in a defined service area that covers the Strip and surrounding neighborhoods. San Diego is next, with service expected to begin later in July. Denver and Tampa are scheduled for later in 2026.

The expansion comes as Waymo's main competitor, Cruise, remains sidelined following a 2023 incident in San Francisco in which one of its vehicles struck a pedestrian. Cruise suspended operations and has been working to rebuild its safety program and regulatory relationships.

Waymo has raised billions of dollars from Alphabet, its parent company, and from outside investors. The company has said it is not yet profitable but is focused on expanding its geographic footprint and improving the technology before pursuing profitability.

Riders in new cities can join a waitlist through the Waymo One app. The company has not announced pricing for the new markets but said fares will be competitive with traditional rideshare services.
