AMD Launches Helios Rack-Scale AI System, Claiming 30 Percent Better Value Than Nvidia
AMD unveiled its Helios rack-scale AI infrastructure platform on July 23, 2026, at the Advancing AI conference. The system packs 72 Instinct MI455X GPUs and 18 EPYC Venice CPUs into a single rack, delivering 2.9 exaflops of AI compute. AMD says Helios delivers 30 percent more inference tokens per dollar than Nvidia's competing rack. OpenAI, Anthropic, Meta, Microsoft Azure, and Oracle are among the early adopters.
AMD launched its Helios rack-scale AI infrastructure platform on July 23, 2026, at the Advancing AI 2026 conference, positioning it as a direct competitor to Nvidia's dominant AI hardware offerings.
Each Helios rack contains 72 AMD Instinct MI455X GPUs and 18 sixth-generation EPYC "Venice" server CPUs. The system delivers 2.9 exaflops of dense FP4 compute and 1.4 exaflops of FP8 compute, along with 31 terabytes of HBM4 memory and 1.7 petabytes per second of aggregate HBM bandwidth.
AMD claims Helios delivers up to 30 percent more inference tokens per dollar compared to Nvidia's Vera Rubin NVL72 rack, along with 15 percent more peak FP4 performance, 50 percent more HBM capacity, and 6 percent more HBM bandwidth.
The platform uses AMD Pensando networking, including Vulcano 800 AI NICs, to provide 260 terabytes per second of scale-up bandwidth and 43 terabytes per second of scale-out bandwidth. It supports open standards including UALink over Ethernet.
Major AI companies have already committed to deploying Helios. OpenAI expects to bring the system online in the fourth quarter of 2026, with deployments accelerating through 2027. Anthropic has committed to deploying up to 2 gigawatts of AMD Instinct MI455X-based Helios infrastructure. Meta, Microsoft Azure, and Oracle are also among the early adopters.
A single Helios rack is estimated to cost between $5 million and $5.5 million. Systems are in production and scheduled to begin shipping in the second half of 2026.
AMD has outlined a roadmap through 2030, with the Helios 500 series planned for 2027 and the Helios 600 series for 2028.
