American Red Cross Declares National Blood Supply Crisis as Donations Hit Four-Year Low

Donations fell to a four-year summer low, leaving the Red Cross with less than a one-day supply of type O positive blood, the most commonly transfused blood type. The organization began limiting distributions of type O blood to hospitals to preserve supplies for the most critical cases.
The crisis built through June 2026, when the national blood supply dropped by about 25 percent. On July 13, the Red Cross declared an emergency blood shortage after weekly distributions to hospitals exceeded expectations by nearly 3,500 units.
Several factors contributed to the decline. Extreme heat and poor air quality discouraged potential donors. A suspected cyclosporiasis outbreak affecting more than 11,500 people reduced the pool of eligible donors. The loss of school-based blood drives during summer break also played a role.
Health officials warned the shortage could lead to delayed surgeries and strain on maternity wards and emergency departments.
The Red Cross urged eligible donors to schedule appointments through the Blood Donor App, the official website, or by calling 1-800-RED-CROSS. The organization said an increase of just three donors per blood drive would be enough to resolve the crisis.
To encourage donations, the Red Cross offered $20 Amazon gift cards for donations made throughout August 2026.
