Apple Releases iOS 27 With AI-Powered Siri, May Charge for Advanced Features Later

Apple released iOS 27 this week, bringing a significantly more capable AI-powered version of Siri to hundreds of millions of iPhone users.

The updated Siri can handle more complex requests, maintain context across conversations, and coordinate with third-party apps in ways the previous version could not. Architectural analysis of the system suggests it may eventually function as an orchestration layer for external AI models, including Anthropic's Claude.

However, reports indicate that Apple may introduce usage limits and gated paid access for the most server-intensive AI features. If that happens, some Siri capabilities that are currently free could move behind a paywall, shifting the assistant into a subscription-based model.

Apple has not confirmed those plans. The company has positioned its AI strategy around privacy, arguing that processing data on-device rather than in the cloud gives it an advantage over competitors.

The iOS 27 release comes as the broader AI industry is in turmoil over the pace of development. AI lab leaders are calling for a slowdown in frontier model development, and semiconductor stocks fell sharply this week in response.

Apple's iPhone Duo, its first foldable smartphone, is also set to ship in October. The device features the 2-nanometer A20 Pro chip and carries a starting price of $1,999.

iOS 27 is available as a free update for iPhone models going back several generations. Users can download it through the Settings app.
